Bridled?

What a wonderful thing it would be to have this thought in our hearts: “Jesus, I love to obey You.” Personal communion with the Savior will be followed by the joy of personal service and allegiance. Are you ready to obey in all humility and weakness and reverence? Can you say, “Yes, Lord Jesus, I will obey”? If so, give yourself up to Him completely. Then your thinking will be, “I am not going to speak one word if I think that Jesus would not like to hear it. I am not going to have an opinion of my own, but my whole life is going to be covered with the purity of Christ’s obedience to the Father and His self-sacrificing love for me. I want Christ to have my whole life, my whole heart, my whole character. I want to be like Christ and to obey.” Give yourself up to this loving obedience.

-Andrew Murray, The Practice of God's Presence, p.288

James 3:2-3 ASV - 2 For in many things we all stumble. If any stumbleth not in word, the same is a perfect man, able to bridle the whole body also. 3 Now if we put the horses' bridles into their mouths that they may obey us, we turn about their whole body also.

James 3:2 tells me that my words are an indicator of the way my life is heading. If I obey in what I say, then I will obey in what I do.

2 Corinthians 10:5 ASV - casting down imaginations, and every high thing that is exalted against the knowledge of God, and bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ;

The good news is, Christ is ready and willing take the reins if I will accept the bridle. So, even when I forget my place and start to get mad because someone did me wrong, I can hand the reins back to Christ. I can say, “Oops no, that thought slipped out. Take it, please.” Christ will take it, so that it doesn’t cause me to stumble. I’m not qualified to handle it. I cannot rebuke my own pride. Give it to Christ to overcome for you. In this way, I humble myself by declaring that when I am weak Christ is mighty to save in all circumstances. What I have done is not important, because Christ is ready, able, and willing no matter what I have done. Bridle up! Obey again. I am most free when Jesus Christ sets my course not on the basis of what I have done, but on the basis of sticking by obedience to what is absolutely best for me. Thank You Jesus!

Story?

For 2021, I am reading through the Bible with the Bible Project-Biblical Storyline Reading Plan on the YouVersion App. This devotional will follow along with the daily reading. The reading for January 14 is: Genesis 41-42 We find in Genesis 41:8 that no one could interpret the dream of Pharaoh. In Genesis 41:16 Joseph makes it clear that God is the One who interprets dreams.  In Genesis 41:39, Pharaoh tells Joseph that because God has revealed this to Joseph, surely Joseph is the most discerning and wise. We find that Joseph finally understood the meaning of the dreams he had about his brothers bowing down to him. Joseph's story was really about God all along. God had put Joseph in exactly the right place with the gift of dream interpretation that only comes from God. God shows Himself through the life of Joseph.  I am not the hero of my story. So, when I feel left behind in my own life, I need to remind myself. God is here too. God will handle my deepest needs when the time i...

Aroma Of Christ To God

What keeps our fire burning for God is the courage that comes from growing in the grace, that is, obeying God in doing what we cannot do without God’s divine empowerment, His grace. So, why are there people who call themselves Christians who do not do what God wants them to do? These are people who want something apart from God. Maybe they became aware of the good they ought to do by reading their Bible or in prayer, but instead of obeying God’s plan for their gifts, they put God out of their mind and went the other way. Maybe they weren’t willing to quit leaning on their favorite crutch when God called them to be free of its burden. Maybe they were afraid that they were not good enough to do what God called them to do.  The result of disobedience is dullness. If we fail to turn everything in us over to God for His glory, then we lose the power of God’s grace in our lives to bring joy from obedience. If we refuse to give ourselves fully to God, then the Bible only reminds us that...
